Welcome to the WVU Pollution Prevention Program

We all rely on this planet for our survival and to provide us with the necessities of life. It is crucial that we ensure that our planet can continue to provide us with those resources. Pollution Prevention (P2), one of the key approaches toward this endeavor, is any practice that eliminates, reduces, or otherwise prevents pollution at the source - before it is created - removing any concern about safe disposal methods or harmful effects on the environment.

The primary objective of our Pollution Prevention program is to provide technical assistance to Small and Medium Enterprises in key industries by assisting with identification, development, and implementation of P2 methods. The recommendations provided to the industries are designed to help the business lower operational costs by reducing expenditures, water and energy usage, waste, and disposal costs, while at the same time maintaining - and often improving - productivity.

  • Food and Beverage Manufacturing and Processing
  • Chemical Manufacturing, Processing and Formulation
  • Automotive Manufacturing and Maintenance
  • Aerospace Product and Parts Manufacturing and Maintenance
  • Metal Manufacturing and Fabrication

The Industrial and Management Systems Engineering program at West Virginia University is offering technical assistance via on-site P2 assessments. The project team will make a planned visit to your facility to assess and gather data on energy, water, material, and personnel use. Assessment data along with input from the facility managers will be used to develop P2 recommendations. A detailed report based on the findings will be submitted to the facility shortly after the on-site assessment.

Various synergistic activities such as training workshops, conference with themed roundtables and off-site technical assistance on P2 Best Practices are being organized to train businesses/facilities about the source reduction techniques to help them adopt and implement P2 approaches, and to increase the development, adoption and market penetration of greener products and sustainable manufacturing practices.
